TWELVE STEPS TO A PERFECT INTERVIEW
- Be on time with your cell phone turned off.
- Bring copies of your resume, a pen and a notepad.
- Practice your best smile and prepare (under a minute) answers to these. Practice the answers aloud!
- Tell me about yourself.
- What do you do best?
- Why did you choose our company?
- What did you like (dislike) about your last job?
- Why have you changed jobs so often?
- Why did you leave your last job?
- Why have you been out of work for so long?
- Find out everything you can about the company in advance and be sure to tailor your resume to the job to be filled.
- Answer questions and then stop - don't babble on
- Don't joke around - be pleasant but don't try to be funny.
- Be cautious about revealing details of your personal life. Be sure that any online sites like FaceBook and MySpace are set to 'Private'.
- Know every detail on your resume and be prepared to expand if asked for more information.
- Prepare three (under a minute) PAS stories:
- PROBLEM you encountered at work
- Your APPROACH to the problem
- The SOLUTION
- If asked about salary you might ask what salary they have budgeted for the job. If pushed for a range don't go below the minimum you would accept.
- Ask questions about the job and write down details of what was said, names of interviewers, the date and location so you will have this information if there is a second interview. Ask for a business card.
- Write a thank you note, mentioning any high points that came up in the interview. You might even add something you forgot to mention.
